"THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN TO ILLUSTRATE THE HISTORY OF 19th. CENTURY CLOTHING THROUGH A SELECTION OF DOLLS' CLOTHES OF THE PERIOD. IT IS INTENDED FOR DOLL COLLECTORS AND DRESSERS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT HOW THE AUTHENTIC DOLL'S CLOTHING WAS MADE. THE EMPHASIS IS ON CUT AND SEWING TECHNIQUES. THE PATTERNS ARE FOR DOLLS OF APPROX. 18" TALL; THEIR MEASUREMENTS ARE PROVIDED AT THE BACK OF THE BOOK ALONG WITH SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR ALTERING THE PATTERNS TO FIT DOLLS OF OTHER SIZES. THE PATTERNS INDICATE HOW MANY BUTTONS, HOW MANY YARDS OF TAPE CORDING, ETC.. ARE NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE PATTERN. NO PATTERN IN THIS BOOK REQUIRES MORE THAN A YARD OF MATERIAL, MOST CONSIDERABLY LESS, GIVE THAT MANY PEOPLE WOULD BE WORKING FORM OLD GARMENTS, SCRAPS, AND ODDMENTS, ETC...
THE BOOK IS APPROX. 10" X 8 3/4", AND IS 224 PAGES LONG. THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FULLY ILLUSTRATED. SEWING BY HAND INSTRUCTIONS ARE ALSO GIVEN. (FASHIONS BEFORE 1860 WERE ALL HAND SEWN. AFTER THAT DATE MACHINE SEWING IS COMMONLY FOUND). NOTES AND ILLUSTRATIONS ON OLD AND NEW FABRICS, TOOLS, DIAGRAMS OF STITCHES, SEAMS, CLOSURES, ARE ALSO GIVEN. THERE IS A CHAPTER ON "MAKING THINGS FIT", WITH SOME ALTERATION TECHNIQUES, AND A GLOSSARY OF TERMS.
THE SEWING PATTERNS INCLUDE/: FOR DOLLS WITH SHOULDER PLATES (1835-1860): DAY DRESSES, CIRCA 1837- 1845; CHEMISETTE; PAGODA SLEEVE DAY DRESS (1850- 18550); UNDERSLEEVES; YORK BODICE DAY DRESS (1855)AND WRAPPERS (1860).
PATTERNS FOR THE FRENCH FASHION DOLLS (1865- 1883) INCLUDE THE WALKING COSTUME; PROMINADE DRESS; AND PRINCESS SEAMED POLONAISE. THE GERMAN COMPOSITION LADIES PATTERNS (1900- 1915) INCLUDE: EDWARDIAN 5-GORE SKIRT AND WAIST/BLOUSE (1905); THE BRIDGE DRESS (1910).
