    Description

Antique 1912 Magic Lantern Glass Slide of James J. Hill, Great Northern Railway Magnate by T.W. Ingersoll, St. Paul Minnesota.   This antique glass slide is in good condition, no cracks or breaks.   This is a black & white image with hand colored facial features.  It has an image of a young James J. Hill on the left & a older version of him on the right.  On the glass it says: Jas. J. Hill, 50 years ago and today 75 years young.  On the side of the slide, partially obscured by another sticker there's a label that reads Ingersoll Co. St. Paul, Minn.  I believe this was taken by either T.W. Ingersoll or the Juul-Ingersoll Company.  T.W. Ingersoll (Truman Ward Ingersoll 1862-1922) was more known for his stereoviews published in the USA.  James Jerome Hill (1838-1916) was a Canadian-American railroad executive. He was the chief executive officer of a family of lines headed by the Great Northern Railway, which served a substantial area of the Upper Midwest, the northern Great Plains & the Pacific Northwest. Because of the size of this region & the economic dominance exerted by the Hill lines, Hill became known during his lifetime as "The Empire Builder".  A quote attributed to Hill: "Give me Swedes, snuff & whiskey & I'll build a railroad through hell!"  This Magic Lantern glass slide is of historical importance to any Great Northern Railway or St. Paul image collector.  Don't miss out on it.
