2 *UNSMOKED*N.O.S.* Pipes: PRINCE EXTRA/LONDON MADE + CAPTAIN SMITH (D.Socratus)
Two unsmoked, new-old-stock pipes, made some time in the 1980s - 1990s (see the last photos showing the oxidation accumulated on their stems before they were cleaned). Both apple shapes, the PRINCE EXTRA with bowl

imilar in size to Dunhill's Group 4, the CAPTAIN SMITH to Group 3.
We do not know the origins of PRINCE EXTRA/LONDON MADE, probably it is some English second. In all cases it is a nice pipe, made from a quite clear piece of briar. CAPTAIN SMITH is the earliest stamp of the Greek pipe maker Dimitris Socratus (hence the 'DS' stamp on the stem), which later became 'D.E.S.' (from the initials of his name). A semi-blasted pipe, maybe not among his best designs (we have quite a lot in our collection).
Still, in all respects, this is a pair of decent unsmoked pipes, perhaps more suitable for an initiation to pipe smoking.
The smaller has approximate diagonal length 133 mm (5.63"), bowl height 39 mm (1.65") and weighs 41 gr (1.90 oz). Marks : Captain Smith [script], Real Briar [script, partly faded], 202, 'D' over 'S' on the side of the stem.
The larger has approximate diagonal length 144 mm (5.24"), bowl height 44 mm (1.46") and weighs 53 gr (1.94 oz). Marks :

Both pipes take 9 mm filters and have original vulcanite stems.

Please examine the photos in the listing as they are part of the description. The items for sale are photographed using high resolution lenses from all angles so that you can make your own assessment. We have selected not to list uncleaned "as is" pipes, for the reason that important defaults may be hiding behind dirt, oxidation or cake. For this reason we prefer the long and tedious work of cleaning them before they are offered for sale. Oxidation is removed from the stems and then they are sanitized using pure alcohol. The stummels are carefully cleaned and then sanitized. Most of the cake is removed from bowl interior of used pipes, leaving a thin layer of only about 0.5-1.0 mm cake so that the pipes do not need to be cured from start.
