Gray filters, also known as ND filters (Neutral Density) or neutral density filters, block the entire visible spectrum evenly and thus lead to a light reduction without affecting colors and contrast. Since they block the UV radiation at the same time, the additional use of a UV blocking filter is not necessary.
A neutral density filter must also often be used to reduce the depth of field - wide open aperture. In this application, however, the strength of the effect depends on the focal length of the lens. They also allow "normal" time and aperture values if the film speed is too high for the prevailing brightness.
