Description
This is one of those rare unsmoked pipes that is truly a treasure of a find and a stunning piece indeed from the legend Gert Holbek. Gert Holbek started fixing pipes in 1953 at the Suhr workshop with Poul Rasmussen. Many say that Gert was as influential with Danish pipes as the great Sixten Ivarrson. Gert eventually started making pipes and went to work for Pipe Dan and was once again quite influential in their success as well. Over his time he made approximately 6662 pipes, this one numbered 6498 which means he only made 164 after this one. I do not completely recall exactly what all of the nomenclature he used means, for example this pipe showing "ER 1". The shape is incredible, a hybrid of sorts showing Brandy with a Canadian shank and a touch of that signature Pipe Dan look. The bowl cradles in hand perfectly while feeling lightweight and well balanced. There is a lot of briar surrounding the relatively modest chamber yet still affords healthy capacity. The long oval shank transitions effortlessly in about a quarter bend and does not appear to taper but remains sturdy all the way to meeting the original vulcanite stem with straight bit and just a touch of down-turned bend. Finish is remarkable, a sort of mix between a Danish and golden contrast which created a spectacular effect and loads of depth while the briar displays exceptional 360 degreestraight grain that looks painted on with a brush, wow!!! I've had just a few of Holbek's pipes over the years but was fortunate to recently acquire a few from a prominent collector in Europe. Most of his pipes went to Japan decades ago and they are quite hard to find. Surprisingly unsmoked, an opportunity here to obtain one of what I'm sure is only a handful of pipes left from Holbek that remain unsmoked! **Original carbonizing deteriorated so I removed it almost completely. Upon request I will re-carbonize the chamber.
