    Description

Delacour (say it with me, "de la kwah"!) pipes were known the world over for their incredible quality in craft and produced exceptional pieces in the early 1900's, many times cased with real amber stems. Fast forward to 1962 and Eugine Lacroix's son Jean Paul set up Lacroix pipes in the same factory where Delacour was made and continued the long standing tradition of carving the finest aged briar. I've not had many pipes from JPL, but this one is quite impressive!! I believe this pipe was made in the 1970's or 1980's by the masters of St. Claude who were renowned for carving intricate designs in briar which is not an easy task. This one modeled after the ever popular meerschaum Eagle claw shows amazing detail with the talons grasping a perfect Egg shaped bowl that offers relatively modest capacity. At over 8" long, it will smoke cool and dry and makes for a fine reading pipe. The detail continues up the half bent long shank where you can unscrew a threaded mid section tenon to aid in cleaning this pipe without having to buy churchwarden cleaners! Past this section we find an ornate turned section that is eventually mounted with what appears to be a copper accent ring. Stem is a swirled cream colored saddle lucite adding nice contrast with slight fishtail bit and gold "JPL" logo. The finish is a rich and warm medium stain with a touch of red that highlights quite a bit of birdseye throughout on this spectacular briar. A phenomenal piece from Jean Paul Lacroix that awaits it's first smoke, this one is definitely a very well functioning conversation piece!
