    Description

Vintage original 3x4 in. US double-sided photographic herald
from the teens silent film drama,
    LES MISERABLES
, released in 1917 by the Fox Film Corp. and
    directed by Frank Lloyd
. Based upon the famous novel by Victor Hugo, Jean Valjean (William Farnum), a good and decent man who has committed a minor crime, is imprisoned but escapes. He is pursued thereafter for years by Javert (Hardee Kirkland), the cruel and implacable arm of the law. The cast also includes George Moss, Gretchen Hartman, Kittens Reichert, Jewel Carmen, Dorothy Bernard,
This is a special double-sided herald that was printed for the Miller's Theater in downtown Los Angeles (which no longer exists).
It consists of an actual photograph
    that depicts the film's star,
    William Farnum
, as Jean Valjean, with descriptive information about the film and the showing on the verso. It is in fine- condition with a crease of varying sizes on each corner and a few very small creases in the image area with light signs of surface dirt on the verso.
This 1917 silent film version of
    Les Miserables
contains the largest studio-built outdoor set ever built in the Fort Lee, New Jerysey area, which was the motion picture production capital of the United Starts before moving westward to Hollywood, California.
Heralds were given out to patrons as they were leaving the theatre to "
herald," or announce, the next film that would be playing at that particular theater (a "coming attraction" advertisement) and they are very collectable. This one is of particular interest since it consists of an actual photograph vs. a printed image.
