PETERSON UNSMOKED EARLY ARAN D3 CUTTY SHAPE SALESMAN ESTATE PIPE

Description

I absolutely love Peterson's D shapes although they prove relatively hard to find. Most are found in Europe as they were specifically designed for the Danish market which coincidentally falls perfectly in line with the story behind this pipe! This unsmoked D3 Cutty/Belge was part of a large Salesman display which was a big wooden hinged case that opened/unfolded and had many metal rubber coated clips that held the pipes in place. Where was this Salesman located? Denmark. Denmark surprisingly has a TON of Peterson's as they were quite popular amongst Danish smokers who moved on from their Stanwells to try the Irish tradition. The Aran was first released in 1965, this D3 was made in the 1990's and has still not seen flame. While a Cutty at heart it seems to offer smooth Danish lines/characteristics and at only 28g is extremely lightweight and well balanced. The bowl offers lovely forward cant, thick walls, and a healthy sized chamber. It transitions gracefully to the long round sturdy shank that meets the original vulcanite fishtail stem with white cursive "P" logo. What's interesting is normally the stems on the D3 have some down-turned bend to them but this one straight. You can see that bend with the 2011 St. Patrick's Day pipe which was a D3. The finish on newer Aran's is listed as a "warm medium walnut" but as you can tell in the 1990's this is not the case. This Aran is a very light almost natural stain that highlights the starburst grain on the left side while the right is completely covered in tight tiny birdseye while there is fine cross grain to the front and rear just offset. A lovely unsmoked Peterson Aran D3 which may well be one of the first ones they ever made, this beautiful pipe is not to be missed!
