    Description

Here is the second of two Pedro Mercedes Angel Jugs that I have listed separately. While Pedro Mercedes made them as and considered them jugs, many today like to use them as a candle holder, and they work nicely as that too. Pedro Mercedes(1921–2008) was a self taught clay artist, introduced to his craft by his step father early in life, he developed a deep love for clay and left school early to go on to become a lifelong premier potter in Ecuador, winning many awards in his lifetime for his unique work across the world. He did a lot of traditional South American Sgraffito pottery pieces and murals, but later in his life, branched off to more self expressive figures, such as animals and self stylized deities. Today his 1600's studio with ancient ovens has become a museum honoring his great contribution to the arts of his nation and his works are in demand across the world. This amazing piece measures 8" tall, 4.5" across the base and 7" wing to wing. She is glazed in a wonderful blended glaze in brown, teal blue & buttery cream washed over red clay. This piece has no chips, cracks or repairs, it has some small spots where the thick glaze has flaked off, see photos, at the top rim and at the top of the handle at the top tip of each wing and at the bottom edge of one wing. These are stable and were caused by air under the glaze and show no signs of losing any more glaze around these spots. This seems to be a normal issue with his heavily glazed pieces from later in his life. Because of the colorful nature of this glaze, these few spots missing glaze are all but impossible to see. It is signed P. Mercedes on the underside. These are very rare to find in the US. Occasionally they show up for sale in Spain and South America. I guarantee, you might go a lifetime and never see a pair of his Angel Jugs available again and certainly not in this glaze.
