The Stamford, Spalding and Boston Banking Company came into being as a joint stock bank with this title in 1880. It carried on issuing its own notes into the early 20th century when it finally merged with Barclays Bank. The Stamford, Spalding and Boston Banking Company never went bust. When the merger occurred, the whole note issued was honoured by Barclays. To show that this had been done, each note was given a V-shaped cancellation cut over the signature area.
