OVERVIEW
Vintage item
Created in the village of San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua, this handsome pottery vase was hand made and hand painted by Danilo Gallegos y Geovany. He is one of the potters that are reviving the ceramics tradition there using the local volcanic clay. Incised lines form a band around the neck and outline the shapes of the crouching black panthers, one on each side, with mouth wide open to catch the unsuspecting bird. The overall glaze is a polished grey-blue flecked with red and tan. The black shapes stand out on the tan band encircling the belly of the vase.
The vase stands 9 1/2 inches tall, about 6 inches across the widest point and has a circumference there of 19 inches. Weighing 1 3/4 pounds, it's in excellent condition, with no cracks or chips and only minor wear to the paint in spots. Signed on the bottom by the artist in his beautiful handwriting: Danilo Gallegos y Geovany San Juan de Oriente Nicaragua, it's a strikingly modern yet traditional piece.
